Salgótarján, seat of Nógrád County is 6km-s south from Somoskőújfalu. Despite being famous mainly of the unique natural attractions of its surroundings and the special museums presenting its industrial history nowadays, events well-known not only in Hungary but internationally as well (Dixieland Festival, Tarján Spring Festival, International Folclore Festival, Castle Festival) , athletes with outstanding national and international results, and last but not least Hungary’s best cake 2015 winning G&D Confectionery also makes this once lively industrial city’s worth visiting.
The Mine Museum of Salgótarján is Hungary’s first, Europe’s second coal mine exhibition place. The museum established in the former József mine (abandoned in 1951 and having produced 776.000 tons of coal till that time) commemorates the hard and dangerous work of the miners.
The Baglyaskő Castle Nature Protection Visitor Centre – right next to the remains of the former Baglyaskő Castle – presents the historical and natural values of the region.
Dornyai Béla Museum gives place to – besides temporary exhibitions – constant exhibitions presenting the history of Nógrád county and the glass art results of the Salgótarján Glass Factory. Its gallery shows the most valuable pieces of the Museum’s art collection.
